I'm actually having 2 issues:

  1. Eyefinity doesn't work (can't go beyond 1920x1200)
  2. I get terrible performance with more than 1 monitor enabled

I'm getting 10-20 fps on TF2 and CS:S, with "lag" spikes where it'll drop to 1-2fps. When if I run a single monitor I get "near" Windows 7 performance (80-100fps). The fps does go up if I run in a window at 1280x800, but I'm getting horrible input lag (I move the mouse, 500-1000ms later game responds).

This is most likely a problem with AMD's drivers, you should report the issue to them too.

I also tried CS1.6 and while preformance isn't good, it's a little better (~30fps), and stutters.

Hello.

I have the same problem too, with AMD 5870.

Another person experiencing the same problem here. i7 with HD5870 with three monitors (runs Eyefinity under windows fine) and linux x64.

I turn off two monitors and everything is great. With all three on I get about 1-2FPS in steam games like Portal and TF2.

Same here with an HD7750 connected to 2 1920x1080 displays.

I've solved this issue by switching to the OSS (radeon) drivers and performance is great with all 3 monitors enabled.

Yes, the Radeon HD5xxx series will get far better performance on the latest Open Source drivers at this point.

The two drivers have performed neck and neck for some time, but the list of games and other applications where the proprietary drivers perform better on that generation has been rapidly shrinking.

On a handful of games that can take full advantage of OpenGL 4.x or OpenCL this may not be the case, but otherwise this is now the case.

This was actually listed among the reasons for moving the HD5xxx to the legacy tier last year. (Same thing happened with the HD4xxx a few years earlier.)

This bug may be a bigger concern for HD7xxx users who don't currently have a fully functional Open Source driver. However, it is not a Steam Bug, so other than Valve putting pressure on AMD, or implementing a workaround recommended by AMD, there is not much Valve can do.

Closing as general video driver quality from 2013 is no longer relevant.
