i have also same http response error with TF2.
Odd; do you have any internet proxies configured?
no proxy in use.
OK, the issue seems resolved for me, at least for now. Installed 13.04 this weekend and activated proprietary driver for AMD, now all the games are working fine. Might just have been an issue with the open source edition of the drivers (I tried first with the open source drivers, same result as described above, then with proprietary drivers, which worked fine).
Nothing extracted yet.
Only recently have I thought to try out Counter-Strike:Source on Linux. Until now I have not been able to successfully start the game. I can launch the Steam client fine, I see my list of Linux activated games, including CSS, TF2, HL (the classic version, not Source), CS Condition Zero, Hacker Evolution Duality and Solar 2. All non-Source games start up fine, only CSS and TF2 will not load.
When I start the game, the window pops up for less than a second, then closes right away and leaves me back with my game library, ready to start anything else. Trying to force Window Mode does not work, same thing as without the launch parameter.
Steam should be up to date (just downloaded last update minutes before posting here). Now, I realize I may not have the very latest graphics drivers directly from AMD (currently using Ubuntu's current version from fglrx-updates (proprietary)) - it's just that installing those has not worked for me since Ubuntu 12.10 (resulting in GUI errors like LightDM or Unity not starting or not having 3D support), and I was hoping for another solution. If not, I might have to wait for 13.04 or some future (maybe working) update from AMD, and fall back to my Windows installation for Source games in the meantime.
Maybe someone here has a suggestion as to what I could try or how to solve the problem alltogether, I would be happy to test out theories.
I am posting some basic output from my system here, let me know if you need more.
My HW info according to Steam:
Terminal output from Steam (just launching Steam client, launching CSS once, exiting Steam):
