This has been an issue for a very long time. Well, technically speaking, it's two issues;

  1. Microphone input in source games does not work at all
    or
  2. Microphone input DOES work in source games, but it causes steam and/or the game to crash.

Games like Team fortress 2 or Counter Strike rely heavily on voice chat to formulate quick plans, to chat while moving around, or to warn about sudden enemy influxes. The games are still very much playable without Voice chat, it is just harder to do what I listed above. One thing I noticed is that whenever my steam and/or game crashes from microphone issues, it is because someone else started using their mic at the same time. I'm not sure what causes the no input one, I used to have it but it mysteriously fixed it self shrug.

But anyway, please Valve, look at this issue. This is a major issue, since it causes either steam or the game to crash randomly. Thank you.

This sounds like a duplicate of #1853?

Yes I know about that one, but I posted this in the Steam linux forums, and they suggested I posted it on Git hub... so I reposted the issue. I really don't know what else to do.

It's all on Valve's end. The blocking factor is the same in that we've never been able to catch it here where we can figure out what is happening. The time of the crash is too late, something went wrong earlier and the crash is just a symptom. Eventually we'll pin it down and get a fix but we can't set a concrete timeframe.

Some users have reported that disabling or removing pulseaudio avoids the crash. I understand this isn't a solution, but it's an interesting thing to test to try and localize the problem. If disabling pulseaudio avoids the crash you should report your experience to the pulseaudio folks.

Nothing extracted yet.
