Steam client doesn't work for me at all for about 1 month.
After ~1sec of showing "Connecting to Steam account: m4tx1" it shows following error message:
connection_error
The offline mode works correctly, but online mode doesn't work at all...
After a re-installing the Ubuntu (I've got Ubuntu 13.04 now) it worked for 1 day and once today (a second day), but now it doesn't work. Also, it didn't work for ~1 month in Ubuntu 12.10.

EDIT:
It does work at this moment, WTF.

Some standard questions:

  1. Are you behind a firewall or proxy?
  2. Is there the possibility that your ISP or your workplace blocks Steam or just non-standard ports?
Mm4tx 2013-04-29 github
  1. Nope.
  2. I don't think so, because Steam once works, once not... At this moment it works.
    EDIT:
Steam client doesn't work again... wtf...

Other than some random networking issue (are you using wireless?) it's not clear what's going on. Another user who was having a connection error reported that completely removing and reinstalling Steam fixed things, but that's just a shot in the dark.

are you using wireless?

Nope, I'm on the cable.

I can do it, but I don't think it will help. Now I've got a fully-clean computer after whole HDD format. And the issue was present either before the format and after - now.

Btw., I know that my issue is incomplete - but it's really all I know about it. Maybe tomorrow I'll check if Steam tries to send any packets - if the issue will be still present...

Mm4tx 2013-05-01 github

I turned off almost all of internet applications, turned on Wireshark, turned on Steam, and... what's the result? Steam doesn't even try to connect! It doesn't send any packets!...

I don't know what's the problem. I think Steam doesn't "see" my eth0 connection, I don't have any other explanation...

After purging and re-installing Steam, it works. Time will show how long.

Will close for now as its working for you - please comment here if you have the issue again.

Mm4tx 2013-05-27 github

The issue returned.
I checked the Steam a few (5?) days ago and it didn't worked. I checked it today and it doesn't work, too...

I've started having this issue too, but less severely. It'll say that 1-5 times but after enough retries it works.

Do any of these match up with you?
It's the same on a 5GHz or 2.4 GHz network. I haven't tried wired.
I'm using OpenDNS as my dns.
I'm using RoadRunner (Earthlink) as my ISP.

Mm4tx 2013-05-27 github

I'm having the issue on wired (Ethernet) connection. I haven't tried wireless.
I don't use any special DNS-es - defaults.
I'm using some local ISP :) (I live in Poland)

Btw., in fact - after retry it worked. This time. Previously, it didn't work even after 3-5 retries (and that's why I reported the issue).

I don't know that we'll be able to do much with this as there's no obvious repro information, but reopening.

I am having was issue also. Steam connects fine from my Windows laptop using wireless. My Linux desktop was no longer able to connect. After 'steam --reset', waiting a LONG ass time, and killing the process and re-trying a couple times, it just logged me back in. I had not logged in for months, so perhaps the sync was just bad.

Hello @m4tx, are you still experiencing this issue with an up to date system?

Mm4tx 2017-04-30 github

@kisak-valve I haven't experienced this issue in a long time. I'll post a comment if it occurs to me again.

Kkisak-valve maintainer 2017-04-30 github

Glad to hear it's behaving. If the issue comes back let me know and we can re-open this issue report.
