For whomever it may be who has to deal with this....
This is probably a unicode issue.
@MrSchism: On the contrary, this seems like a font rendering issue.
Anyway, there are other font issues in the pipeline (#23). Best of luck with getting a Hebrew patch.

Leads me to believe it's a U+202 issue.
I can confirm this issue (Ubuntu 12.10 with recommended font packs installed). Text in Hebrew, presumably any right-to-left language, is mirrored in chat.
Unfortunately Steam does not have right-to-left support on any platform. We will keep this issue open but there won't be a fix any time soon.
@gdrewb-valve I know it's not really a concern, but might I ask (for my own knowledge) is it a U+202 error?
Steam's GUI toolkit has no RTL handling at all.
As it's been mentioned: this isn't a critical issue, however it might be something to casually mention around the office space.
Please fix it! :+1:
Joining @okoyl'srequest. The same issues appears for me too.
Update 3 months later: Is there no one addressing this issue? It can be frustrating for RTL language users and I presume it is not so difficult to fix. Thank you.
after almost 2 years no such a simple fix? :<
@GummyGum173 I guess that's the difference between closed-source and open-source projects.
and yet again 4 years later steam Has not fixed this issue.
Does anyone have a solution for this? Even if it's a temporary one.
6 years and still no clue
I have done a retest with Hebrew both in chat and in notifications, it appears to be working correctly.
(I used Arch Linux With Gnome 44.1 X11 Steam on Flatpak, Steam Version: 1684535786)
Though it is important to mention i have used this on Ubuntu with the .Deb version of steam and it worked perfectly there as well

when Chatting with my friends in Hebrew, the letter order is displayed reversed, for example:
instead of seeing אני מסכים איתך
you see: ךתיא םיכסמ ינא
the only problem is the display, when typing it sends correctly.
My friends who tried Steam Linux confirmed it.
