It's more than likely a fgrlx-related error. My Steam used to crash a lot because of fglrx. Time to install catalyst 13.6 beta.
The crash reports are glib detecting heap corruption and aborting. The stack is deep in glib. The Glib-CRITICAL messages could be related, or maybe not. This isn't Steam code so it's hard to know what is going on.
based off of other places talking of this bug, it is VERY likely to be caused by the new intel open source driver update.
there could be a patch for this, but until then, people should try reverting the driver to an old version.

What about everyone not using Intel? I get crashes quite often, which for some reason stops crashing if I run it in a terminal.
scratch that last post, it seems the crash is only happening when im playing the garrys mod beta, and thats after playing several other games for over 8 hours, when i have played that game specifically, steam crashes almost every 10 minutes.
maybe garrys mod is sending a signal back to steam that has not been expected yet, especially since it has a bunch of workshop integration.
this is what constantly repeats durring the crash
/home/buildbot/buildslave_steam/steam_rel_client_linux/build/src/clientdll/../common/pipes.cpp (711) : Assertion Failed: CClientPipe::BWriteAndReadResult: BWrite failed
/home/buildbot/buildslave_steam/steam_rel_client_linux/build/src/clientdll/interfacemap_client.h (1520) : Assertion Failed: bufRet.GetUint8() == k_EClientCommandInterface
/home/buildbot/buildslave_steam/steam_rel_client_linux/build/src/clientdll/../common/processpipe_posix.cpp (375) : Assertion Failed: false
this happens in both beta and normal
different bug?
Is this still happening?
