I have Mageia 3 Linux KDE Stable x64 bit and Steam and games like TF2, CS: Source, Portal works but slower than Ubuntu. Games launch slower and slower load too. In the case of TF2 waiting server connection remains in Mageia 3 much longer than Ubuntu.

@NTMan are you using the same mesa version between the two systems? Are you running SELinux in enforcing mode? … this bug is likely the difference between how the two distros prepare and select their kernels.

As you can see Fedora much newer than Ubuntu :)
Maybe Canonical adds some specific patches for steam?

Why games such as Team Fortress 2 run under Ubuntu very smooth and fast, but under Fedora on same machine with same game settings plays jerkily?
