I'm unable to run either of these games on Ubuntu 12.04.

The title screen comes up but them immediately the error message "Could not load library" appears.

Ubuntu 12.04, all updates applied, AMD FX-6100, Graphics card: GTX 550.

Are you opted into the steampipe beta for these games? Have you tried verifying the games cache?

What helped me fix pretty much all GoldSrc games (where nothing would happen if you'd start a new game, then on second try the game would crash) is to erase and completely reinstall it.

Thanks all. It turned out that the cache was bad. I cleared it and synched and everything was good.
