Do you get a new failure report every time you try this, or are those unrelated?
Those are most likely unrelated, I pasted what was in Steam's System Information panel. Those dumps were probably created when I was testing using native libraries instead of steam's shipped runtime. To be clear, the bug I reported happens with using the shipped runtime, the ones that comes with Steam.
I tried shutting down my desktop environment again, and after verification there was no created file in /tmp/dumps/.
That'll make it more difficult to figure out what's going on as we'll have to recreate your environment here and try to repro. Thanks for checking.
Is there something I can do to provide more information about the bug? I understand this is probably not a high priority bug, but if a game and steam itself refuse to exit correctly, it probably means there's something wrong and it could potentially lead to more severe problems. I'll continue to investigate on my own and update if I find something. Thanks for taking the time to check this :)
It's hard to say what other info might be useful as I don't even have a theory as to what is going on. I think we'll have to reproduce the problem here to investigate further.
I assume Steam shuts down normally when you close it directly?
Yes it does shut down when I exit it either via the Exit button or killing the process (or ctrl-c if I start it in CLI to view the output).
I'll do some work on my side and track down system updates from last week, since it was working fine then. I'll downgrade each package one at a time (if possible, most packages depends on other packages current version), see if it works. I realize that Archlinux is not a supported distribution for you, and there are a lot of updates everyday that could potentially cause problems. I'll help in any way I can, and I don't have any problem with you marking this one as a low priority bug.
I have this bug as well , Ubuntu-Mate , I must close steam before shutting down or it hangs for like 1 minute while steam does not close with the rest of the desktop.
Hello @jpleau, @jjkinas, are either of you still experiencing this issue with an up to date system?
Closing pending feedback.
Nothing extracted yet.
Whenever I logoff from either xfce(4.10), Steam doesn't exit.
There aren't any relevant error messages in the console, except this one:
This causes desktop logging off / reboot / shutdown annoying because I have to go back to a TTY to kill it (since Steam doesn't fully exit), or I have to manually close steam before shutting down the desktop. (xfce hangs after closing xfwm4 if steam is running)
Maybe it's related or not, but when playing DoD:S, sometimes (I can't reproduce it all the time) when exiting the game, it will hang in the same way. I have to kill the hl2_linux processes via a command line. I notice those errors while playing the game:
I'm not sure if it's relevant or not, but this is what I managed to catch from the console.
This wasn't an issue until earlier this week, I can't tell if it was because of a steam update or an update from my package manager (pacman).
Here's my system information:
