As of steam-runtime-release-i386_2013-06-28, launching any non-steam application with the In-Game Community overlay enabled will result in a segfault upon application exit.

I just tested this with a machine that had not yet updated to the recent runtime (steam-runtime-release-i386_2013-03-25) by adding gedit as a non-Steam game, and then launching it. Everything worked as expected. However, immediately after updating to the runtime released on 6/29, this machine behaved exactly the same as my main machine and gedit crashes upon closing.

I assume this has to do with the added ubuntu12_64 directory in ~/.local/share/Steam, as it was added in this update, and all stack traces include a reference to ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so multiple times. Both machines are 64-bit installations of Ubuntu 13.04. Errors occur with both the beta and the release version of Steam, which makes sense as I believe they are the same for the time being.

Actual Steam applications don't seem to be affected. Disabling the In-Game Community overlay results in no segfaults or crashes at all.

StacktraceTop in Ubuntu's details given after the crash is:
