The assert/dump is unusual and unexpected but shouldn't be a critical failure so I'm not sure that's the issue. Do you ever get any Steam UI, like the login dialog? Is there any more terminal output?

yes, I get something. It asks me to accept the EULA. After that it shows its updating message. That's the last thing I see of Steam. A login windows never shows up.
Also, the output ends right after the HTTP error response.
I have the exact problem than you, it gives me error on 704 line. I post later the details (which I have posted on dota2 git already)

@deri82 , your problem appears to be different as Paxnos is not getting the verification problem that you are. Your problem seems to be with an invalid download of an update. If you completely remove Steam and reinstall that may help, but the underlying cause of the bad download can't be determined from the info here.
Paxnos, can you upload your dump on GitHub instead of the download manager you used? It'll be easier to access.

That file corresponds to the _id assertion you see output about. I don't believe that should be fatal, so it doesn't get us closer to what's causing Steam to not start. It's an unusual assert which may indicate a problem with your OpenGL installation, but it could be unrelated also, there's no way to tell from the information in the dump file. You could try refreshing your OpenGL, in particular the 32-bit components Steam uses, but that's a long shot.
Ok, so I wasn't 100% sure what you meant exactly by refreshing my OpenGL components.
I tried different AMD Catalyst versions (they provide the OpenGL libraries / components, I think). I didn't have any success. I then tried the open "xserver-xorg-video-ati" driver and, surprisingly, Steam started without any problems!
Sadly, this isn't a proper solution, since it's not really appropriate for playing games.
I tried different fglrx versions (directly from AMD, xorg-edgers, mint repositories) but no matter which one I choose, it still fails. (Latest crash dump is CrashID=bp-5fb40df8-327c-4742-9e3c-6efa62130805 - uploading finally worked)

That's what I meant. The latest crash is a crash in fglrx, so you hit an issue in the AMD driver in that particular case. Do you get that repeatedly? Is it with the latest AMD driver? If so you should contact AMD.
Yes, I had that with every Catalyst version I tried. 13.1 up to 13.8. Currently running "2:9.012-0ubuntu1" (might be 13.1 - not sure, though) (which this crash dump should be from). Weird thing is, I had it working on this computer and Linux Mint 15 before.
I'm just having problems with Steam. Everything else works just fine. I also tried playing Minecraft (to test OpenGL), which works fine.

I was able to start steam now and change settings to beta update and it updated itself, but for some reason when I tried dota2, it was all blank??? Wine +dota2 works...

OK. I finally fixed it.
After thousands of driver tests I decided to wipe every fglrx thing on my PC I could find and installed Catalyst 13.8 Beta once more.
I did a reboot and it.. works! I'm not sure what exactly happened or why it is solved now, but I'm glad it works now!

I've had previous problems with Steam not starting, but it was solved after I reinstalled my distro.
Now it's back again. The weird thing is, I don't know exactly when it happened. I used it a couple times. A few days after the last use, I wanted to start it again, but suddenly it didn't.
I guess there might've been a fglrx and/or kernel update in betweetn. But changing back to previous versions didn't seem to work.
Here's the log after I reinstalled steam (and purged ./local/share/steam and .steam).
I also tried steam --purge, but it won't change anything.
It asked me to accept the EULA and downloaded an update.
Since it doesn't seem like uploading the .dmp here is possible, I uploaded it here:
