Under the latest stable Cinnamon DE release if you select close from the right click menu on a chat window it will close the whole of steam, gets a bit annoying.
Same here on KDE, happens when using the window manager to close any Steam window rather than the window's custom close button.
Closing as this appears to have been resolved some time ago.
