I think it would be good to tell the user if there are blocked ports or issues with internet, Steam or otherwise such as:
"Steam site seems to be down, click here"
"Cannot communicate through ports XYZ, please consult your Firewall manual"
"Cannot communicate through proxy on ports XYZ, please contact your Network Admin"
If not in a dialog box at least in stderr for advanced.
The creating of account user journey is a bit messed up, it'll kill the Steam client if there's an error rather than trying to work with the user to get them connected like a Wizard.
1.) Is the DNS working? ✓
2.) Can we ping steampowered? ✓
3.) Can we communicate on port 3478? ✘
Aside: "Password Strength" label doesn't get populated until you enter a password in the Create Account window.
I am running Steam inside a Virtual Box at work to test with, we obviously have some blocked ports from these:
