Steam for linux does not open after checking/installing updates

System: Ubuntu 13.24 64bit

Behavior: When starting Steam, it throws up the "Checking for updates" window, which to my knowledge is normal behavior. After that, steam seems to hang - the process exists, uses cycles, and increases my CPU temperature uselessly, but the steam main window and taskbar icon do not exist.

I had the same issue and it happened either because Steam has been updated or because I installed HL1: Source.
The workaround is removing the "appcache" folder from your Steam directory.

When im closing a Steam and start Steam again. Steam client not start. Then im deleted "appcache"" folder and steam client start... This is a bug.

removing $HOME/.steam/steam/appcache has resulted in great success.

I also had the same issue, and, like those above me, removing ~/.steam/steam/appcache solved the problem. However, Steam was working just this morning, and I am reasonably certain there were no updates in the meantime, so I am not sure what the cause of the problem was.

Also, if removing appcache does not work for you, be sure to kill your Steam process first (by using the System Monitor in most Ubuntu-based distributions, for example).

i have a appcache folders in two locations: Why???
~/.local/share/Steam/appcache
~/.steam/steam/appcache

first time im deleting wrong folder.
delete to the "~/.steam/steam/appcache" Steam client working after closing and starting again.

~/.steam/steam is a symbolic link to ~/.local/share/Steam/: it's the same appcache folder in both locations.

thanks. first time im deleting a ~/.local/share/Steam/appcache folder. The Steam client started well, but when I switched it off and starting Steam client again. The same problem continued. When im deleting a ~/.steam/steam/appcache (is this symbolic link). it works even if you close it and start Steam client again.

This is a work-around, not a solution; the problem will come back every time you restart Steam until the bug is fixed. Also, if it keeps working even after you close Steam, I suspect you have not fully closed Steam and all its related applications, or that, for some reason, the bug didn't manifest itself that one time.
