Same problem here:
Buttons B is A and X is B and reassignment of buttons does not work.
Games (like Hammerwatch) work correctly.
Xboxdrv reports all buttons/sticks correctly.

Have use the kernel xpad dirver and xboxdrv but same problem occurs, button mapping wrong/ button not detected. Steam Games (metro last light) see the controller but no button's are working.
Thanks guys
I think I've found a workaround : when I use xboxdrv with --mimic-xpad option it seems to correct the problem.
this is not a permanent solution. what's most strange is that using kernel 3.7.0-030700-generic the controller buttons are mapped correctly for metro last light BUT using either 3.8.0-35-generic OR 3.10.1-031001-generic the buttons are mapped incorrectly. How can this be? xpad should work the same in either kernel. I'm also very curious if this issue exists in steamos? does steamos use xpad OR xboxdrv module?
@ubuntuaddicted Steam uses a custom version of xpad.
has this seriously not been corrected yet? i'm running Xubuntu 14.04 with kernel 3.13.0-36-generic and the buttons are still not mapped correctly within Metro: Last Light. They used to be mapped correctly when I was running 12.04.4 with kernel 3.7.0-030700-generic. I've gone into big picture mode and re-setup the xbox 360 wired controller but still when I launch the game the buttons are all screwed up. How can this by? How will SteamOS even hope to get any sort of following if simple little things like controller button mapping isn't even working? Steam info says it was built Aug 28th 2014 @ 03:25:10. Steam API: v016. Steam package versions: 1409240101.
I am experiencing this problem as well - using Linux Mint 17.1. This issue is now open for over a year...
I have this problem too. Works correctly with the wired controller for me, but the wireless one (which uses a 3rd party receiver) has the buttons buttons mapped incorrectly. The receiver works fine under windows.
issue is ongoing, gamestop usb xb360 wired clone buttons are mapped incorrectly and cannot be remapped
Anything we can do? Still experiencing this on Linux Mint 17.3
Encountering this issue in Fedora 25 right now --mimic-xpad seems to still work as a workaround though!
Rereporting of https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/95
Same issue "B" registers as "A" and "X" registers as "B". The triggers and other buttons aren't mapped at all.
