Same problem here, Steam crashed after put my login and password on paypal page inside steam. I know I'm running on a low-spec machine, this is not my main computer, but I think it's worth reporting this anyway. Follow the logs:

I was able to complete a Paypal transaction under Steam today using the i915 Mesa driver. (Ubuntu 12.04 + xorg-edgers)
@makomk, @brunojcm or @aasami: Does the current steam client work for any of you now?
I just bought a game on Steam via PalPay, but I forgot I'd need to do it on an Intel graphics machine to validate the bug.. heee
It's working on a NVidia GTS 250, anyway.
Seems to work for me now, yeah. (I am however using a slightly newer Mesa version than before - 9.1rc2 apparently.)
@makomk: I was using something close to 9.1 last time, but I changed to a Mesa 9.0 build like you were using originally, and tested again. It still worked for me, so hopefully that means the old instability you saw was fixed in the Steam client at some point.

When trying to buy stuff, Steam consistently crashes after entering my Paypal password:
Atom netbook with i915 graphics, Gentoo 32-bit, KDE. The maximum texture size on i915 is 2048 pixels, so it's not surprising that trying to create a 4096x256 texture failed and crashed Steam. I might be able to get a Ubuntu install going at some point and test this on there, but no guarantees; someone was complaining on the forums that they'd had the same problem on Ubuntu 12.04 though and it should be distro-independent. The hardware just plain doesn't support what Steam is trying to do.
