I wrote a thread on the Steam beta discussion forum regarding this issue, but seeing the lack of comments, I figured I would post it here as well just to be sure.

Since the last two beta update, I'm told that direct rendering is not enabled and I'm given the following url when starting Steam: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457 (Error: OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.)

I tested a few games, FTL works, L4D2 does not, Mark of the Ninja does not.

If I opt-out of the Steam beta, everything works perfectly fine again. I've tried various things, including switching Nvidia drivers, exporting libraries path and what not to get the beta running but nothing worked. I followed the instructions given in the url and I dit not see anything wrong with my system. Beside, everything works fine if I'm not using the beta.

I recently got this message after an update to the beta, and it helpfully pointed out an error I had in my setup.

Would you run steam in a terminal and supply the output as a gist please. What I found was that the nvidia driver was complaining of a mismatched version (the driver had put in an extra /lib/modules/kernelversion-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia-version.ko file), but your issue may be different.

Extra information that could be handy, run these in a terminal and provide the output: sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep nvidia and sudo update-alternatives --get-selections | grep gl

I am running Kubuntu 13.04. The console output from Steam doesn't seem to say anything else than what's been said through the pop-up regarding OpenGL. Still, here is all the requested information:

I'vz got the same problem using Fedora 19 64bit since a few days. I've tried opting out of the beta and I still got the problem. I can also confirm that Mark of the ninja is not running anymore.

I've got the following error when I try to run Mark of the Ninja:

libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.
Game removed: AppID 214560 "Mark of the Ninja", ProcID 13780

Here are some infos:

@Skiski,

What is your output when you execute:

ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo (It may be a different path on your system, I use Kubuntu)
glxinfo | grep render
SSkiski 2013-10-19 github

I've tried the Humble Bundle version of Mark of the Ninja. The 64bit version works fine but the 32bit version produces the same error:

$ ./ninja-bin32
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
  Major opcode of failed request: 152 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (X_GLXVendorPrivate)
  Serial number of failed request: 34
  Current serial number in output stream: 35

So I wonder if it's not a bug in the i386 version of the nvidia library.

Edit:
I've installed glxinfo32 and I got the same problem:

$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo32 | grep renderlibGL: screen 0 does not appear to be DRI2 capable
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/tls/swrast_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
libGL: Can't open configuration file /home/fedoski/.drirc: No such file or directory.
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

So it seems to be a problem with the 32bit versions of the nvidia drivers.

And for the additional informations:

I tried Mark of the Ninja from Humble Bundle, both 32 bit and 64 bit version starts without problems. We may have a different issue here. Opting out of the Steam beta still fixes everything for me.

I've search a little more and my problem seems to come from my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

For the moment mine is:

$ echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib:/home/fedoski/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu/

And if I try:

$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/home/fedoski/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ glxinfo32 | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2

    GL_NV_blend_square, GL_NV_compute_program5, GL_NV_conditional_render,
    GL_NV_parameter_buffer_object2, GL_NV_path_rendering,

The problem seems to come from /usr/lib.

Launching steam with "$LD_LIBRARY_PATH='' steam" seems to solve the problem, even with steam beta.

Can someone give me its $LD_LIBRARY_PATH, just to check ?

Thanks.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.3 and I've got the same problem.

Opting out of the Beta solved the problem. Do you need more information on my system, if it helps?

Here are two relevant thread that helped me fix this problem on my system:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/5/828939163894026239/?l=english#p1
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/810938082694091222/?tscn=1383404856

The short answer is this:

sudo rm /usr/lib/libGL.so.304.84
sudo rm /usr/lib32/libGL.so.304.84

sudo ln -s -T /usr/lib32/nvidia-331/libGL.so.331.17 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.331.17
sudo ln -s -T /usr/lib32/libGL.so.331.17 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1

sudo ln -s -T /usr/lib/nvidia-331/libGL.so.331.17 /usr/lib/libGL.so.331.17
sudo ln -s -T /usr/lib/libGL.so.331.17 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

The code needs to be modified with the proper Nvidia version folder. Basically, make sure that libGL.so.1 is pointing to the right driver.

In my case, this is what it looks like with Steam beta working:

ls -la /usr/lib/libGL*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 656 May 11 00:47 /usr/lib/libGL.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  10 May 11 00:47 /usr/lib/libGL.so -> libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  43 Nov  2 13:13 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/nvidia-313-updates/libGL.so.313.30

ls -la /usr/lib32/libGL*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 May 11 00:47 /usr/lib32/libGL.so -> libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Nov  2 13:11 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 -> /usr/lib32/libGL.so.313.30
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 Nov  2 13:06 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.313.30 -> /usr/lib32/nvidia-313-updates/libGL.so.313.30

That's it. The Steam beta client loads without any error about OpenGL, Mark of the Ninja and L4D2 work again for me.

nVidia driver update doesn’t correctly clean up older drivers, read above comment to repair your install.

I'm pretty sure I did all of the above and it didn't fix the problem until I switched back to the regular client. But i will try tomorrow to confirm this.

Nothing extracted yet.
