Any reason you would want it hidden, beyond it being empty by default? steam://install/250820/ will install files into it.
I assume I won't have to interact with anything in it, so it would make sense to snuck it away along with all the other steam files.
Besides, I think it looks weird in /home/$user/
I'm seeing it in /home/user/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/OpenVR/, what OS are you using?
The OpenVR binary lives under SteamApps. Its config file lives in ~/openvr at the moment. You're right that it shouldn't though. I'll fix that.
This directory appears in ~/.local/share/openvr now. The OpenVR update with the fix should already be rolling out.
