The Steam client doesn't have support or lack support for specific video cards, it just needs working OpenGL. What problem do you get?
Everytime i open the client a prompt says the system runing older proprietary nvidia video drivers i need at least 304, to play first i open the game and them login in the client the prompt appears but the client doesn't closed because first must closed the game, obviously i can't upgrade to that version 173 is the last driver add support fx5500
There's no easy solution to your problem. The driver upgrade check is deliberate and we really do want people to run updated drivers since they are much, much better than the old ones. That leaves you in a bad place since NVIDIA has chosen to drop support for your card, but Valve doesn't have a lot of control over that.

I am in the same boat. My video card is no longer supported by new series of drivers, so nvidia-173-updates (on Ubuntu 12.04) is the latest I can do. I got into the home streaming beta this morning and was hoping I could try streaming from my beefy desktop PC to the older Linux PC hooked up to my TV. Sadly, I can't even launch Steam itself, much less find out if streaming might work. I don't care if I can't launch games that use that CPU to render, I'd just be happy with a home streaming "client".
Yeah that's sucks, is too bad i can't play cs in linux, nouveau driver is not a option the client looks white artifacs :c
One option would be to create a list of what cards should be using what drivers. While this would inflate the size of the driver-check modules a little, the data is only kept in memory for a short period if time.
This way, if the card is on one of the two legacy lists, it should be able to handle it.
I hope Valve and the video chipset manufacturers are willing to work with each other for such a solution. (After all, nVidia and AMD have incentive not to provide such information, as it would pressure people to buy the newer cards.)
While the steam client does not explicitly check for driver versions anymore, it generally expects GL 2 capable hardware. Your mileage will vary with hardware before that. There's no reasonable expectation for pre-GL2 hardware to gain support in the future.

Dear people of valve, please, please, please! add support to nvidia legacy driver 173.xx.xx, counter strike runs awesome in a fx5500 even better then windows, the only thing why i can't switch entirely to linux is the steam client, i can't believe i can play cs in xp, vista or windows 7 whit this card but no in linux i mean c'mon
