I filed a bug here: https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3046 (it will warn you about rpmfusion bugzilla's self-signed certificate)... but it turns out that this is not specific to the rpmfusion package, it also happens with your official tarballs in http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/pool/steam/s/steam/

Extracted steam on Fedora 20 x64, launched it, logged in with my steam ID, then after a few seconds I get an error dialog instead of the steam main window:

Could not connect to Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your Internet connection, or with the
Steam network. Please visit www.steampowered.com for info.

Of course, I ruled out the possibility of a firewall/NAT/etc. interfering (besides, a Windows machine on the same network has no issues) and the Steam servers are online.

I also checked ~/.steam/registry.vdf and "OfflineAFS" == 0, and "Offline" == 0.

Here's what I get in the terminal:

$ ./steam

Ok, for the avoidance of doubt I managed to find http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/pool/steam/s/steam/steam_1.0.0.45.tar.gz and run ./steam from that official tarball. Same issue, so it's not an issue coming from rpmfusion per se.

I am also experiencing this error after applying the last beta update yesterday

I confirm this issue on Linux Mint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04).
I can't enter steam for 3 days already!

Somehow this corrected itself between trying to log in on Dec 16th and Dec 19th. I was able to log in on the 19th, and successfully applied the latest update after that.

Same here. As far as I remember I wasn't able to log in for at least a month, I guess more like two or three. I only occasionally tried though (like every few weeks). I installed and reinstalled it multiple times from the software center.

Oh well, after looking at the log I removed /home/alexander/.local/share/Steam before reinstalling, which did the trick. Didn't knew that removing the package would still leave data on the drive...
