Thanks to the efforts of https://github.com/chippey, this problem has been identified as being triggered when using Steam with Optirun/Primusrun/Bumblebee. On Nvidia Optimus systems, Steam will not utilize the GPU unless it is run with either Optirun or Primusrun. In my case, I am using the Nvidia proprietary driver, so I get better performance using Primusrun.

Are you using optirun/priumsrun/bumblebee? This looks like the same thing as #666.

GGarlandKey 2013-01-22 github

Yes, I use primusrun/bumblebee. Without it, Steam games won't utilize my GPU. Will update original post to reflect this.

I have the same issue. If I start Steam without primus everything looks fine. When I start it with primusrun the logo and some publicity that pops up are distorted.

@Dommicentl They came up with a workaround. Instead of starting Steam using optirun (which is inefficient since it keeps your GPU running constantly), you can now define which games you want to utilize optirun.
