Every game I tried can't use the steam overlay. The full message is:

ERROR: ld.so: object 'gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

I'm running Steam in Debian wheezy amd64 with the nvidia driver 310.14-1.

Ddraeath 2012-12-20 github

Can you run 'ldd' against gameoverlayrenderer.so and paste the results here?

RRossBrunton 2012-12-20 github

I also have this issue, and the steam overlay doesn't work.

I have no idea how to use ldd, it gives me a "not found" error.

The environment variable LD_PRELOAD has the value 'libdlfaker.so:librrfaker.so' only if optirun is running the process, otherwise it is empty/undefined. The error message is identical if steam is not running via optirun.

Ubuntu 12.10, with driver version "4.3.0 NVIDIA 310.19", apparently.

Rrebl 2012-12-20 github

I will post the ldd result tonight at home. I ran it before posting the bug though, and all the libraries were found (not a "not found" in sight).

My laptop doesn't have Optimus, so I ran the nvidia driver without optirun or any other solution of that kind.

I'm having the same error when trying to run Trine2.

When steam is running, I can run trine2 within command line, with optirun;

21:03 ~ $ optirun .local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Trine\ 2/trine2.sh

this is working, however if I try to run it from steam client, (i started steam with optirun again) I get this error.

optirun will not work with the overlay and may break the game altogether. See this post http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/5/846939854395048434/ for how to configure Optimus and Steam.

Same here; no Optimus and gameoverlayrenderer.so is linked correctly. The error message appears a variable number of times when running any game.

Is the LD_PRELOAD environment variable set to anything in your base environment?

JJLimperg 2013-01-05 github

@gdrewb-valve No LD_PRELOAD in my standard environment. env | grep LD_PRELOAD returns no matches.

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2013-01-07 github

The most common reason for this error is a 64-bit process trying to load gameoverlayrenderer.so since it's a 32-bit binary. However, that usually only happens if you're running a 64-bit game. Is everybody reporting this running 64-bit Linux? From the comments above the people that mentioned their config are both 64-bit.

Jjohndrinkwater 2013-01-09 github

The preload error occurs for all games for me, even with the overlay working fine - for example I get 5 LD_PRELOAD errors from TF2 running on my 64bit system.

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2013-01-09 github

gameoverlayrenderer.so is a required part of the overlay, so if the overlay is working it must have loaded in the game process. The errors must have then come from something else, which is bizarre. If the something else is 64-bit that would explain why the error message is coming up, but I don't know what random 64-bit process would be trying to run on app launch.

Jjohndrinkwater 2013-01-09 github

I’ve been messing with FTL’s launch script for this issue, and noticed that it is an interaction with the shell and its tools (basename, dirname, etc), since steam is calling out to launch games via scripts and those are run in 64bit mode, so the LD_PRELOAD is trying to hook into those processes before they even call the game launchers.

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2013-01-09 github

Ah, that makes sense. The messages are harmless, then. They'll go away entirely when we add 64-bit overlay support. I don't believe this contains actual overlay problems, so I'm closing this bug. If there are problems with the overlay in specific games please open game-specific bugs for those (or look for the existing ones).

Ddanielesegato 2014-03-14 github

@gdrewb-valve I would close this :) change ERROR log in something like DEBUG or just suppress it ;)

?ghost 2015-11-21 github

I wouldn't close this, as it still exists on 64 Bit Ubuntu and Debian with X11.
There's a lot mor errors in this repository that have not been fixed since.

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2015-11-22 github

The preload error messages are expected and normal. They are produced by the system, not Steam, so Steam doesn't have direct control over what they say or how they appear, thus there doesn't appear to be a reason to keep this open.

If the overlay doesn't work that's something else and a new issue (or one of the existing issues) should cover it. The preload messages themselves are not a cause of overlay problems.

?ghost 2015-11-22 github

It's the same message and only log I get while trying to start Incurgency, since it's based on Source too it may be related.
Since the game trys to start and just stops while Steam says "running" for nearly a second.
Nothing else happens.

What was the fix for this issue? It's closed but it seems there was never a clear fix for it

Ccarrotflowerr 2023-09-30 github

@Keylessboi Did you ever get it working? I'm having the same problem.

Llazzy-cipher 2023-11-03 github

I am still having this exact same issue. Disabling the overlay in TF2's settings does not fix the issue.

Iisinaltinkaya 2023-11-06 github

This worked for me: remove the 32bit part from LD_PRELOAD and only leave 64bit part

export LD_PRELOAD=/home/USER/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so

No, sadly...
