Using Xubuntu 13.10, when selecting the "Run Steam when my computer starts"-option in the Steam settings, the Steam main window will always be displayed on login.

Workarround: Open the file '~/.config/autostart/steam.desktop' and change the line

Exec=/usr/bin/steam %U

to

Exec=/usr/bin/steam -silent %U
