Steam gets past log in ("Loading user configuration" or whatever) and then segaults. OS is Arch Linux 64-bit on an Intel i5 3570k.

Exactly the same here. Running steam -clearbeta does exactly nothing and --reset occasionally gets me into the client, but doesn't let me play any vidya.

Fit the record, this manifests differently on SteamOS. You get the login screen, but when you pick an account, it hangs then restarts big picture mode.

This crash was caused by some VR-mode changes that were included in the latest beta. It should be fixed in the latest beta of SteamVR, but I haven't been able to reproduce the problem so I can't verify that.

If you are seeing this problem and are willing to help verify the fix, install "SteamVR" under Tools and then opt-in to the Beta build. Then opt back in to the beta build of Steam itself and you should be running the same code as before plus the fix.

I've tried restarting the client and the system to no avail. Regarding the suggestion from @JoeLudwig I think the issue will be that some people cannot install any tools due to the fact that they cannot log-in.

Followed the instruction of CasualSuperman and JoeLudwig. Initially I forgot to opt into the SteamVR beta, so I had to clear the vdf files again and remove the appmanifest (id 250820), then start over. After logging in successfully, installing SteamVR, and opting into the beta, I'm able to restart the client and launch games. Seems to be operating normally, aside from clearing my preload of Free To Play, which was probably related to the .vdf removal.

I also had a segfault in the newest update of Steam Beta. Was fixed with rm -rf ~/.steam/steam/appcache.
