[minor issue][ubuntu 13.10][linux]steam can't add 2nd game install folder when downloading something.

platform: steam for linux latest ver.
linux ubuntu 13.10 64bit.

game: any game that require 100+ or bigger MegaBytes data to download, game update or install a new game.

how to reproduce the issue.

try some game, that require 100+ or bigger MegaBytes data to download, with steam client for linux.

during downloading process, don't play any game.

try this, go steam->settings->downloads->steam library folders

try to add some steam game install folder from another disk partition, which is not where steam client itself installed.

e.g. i got 2 linux partition, one is 100+ GB, another is 200+GB.

i installed ubuntu 13.10 and my linux /home folder and steam client for linux, all into that 100+GB partition, then, when my steam was downloading something, e.g. downloading dota2,

dota 2 is quite big, downloading progress, it really takes some time.

during downloading, try add new steam game install library .

it will fail. even you have correct linux partition and right linux privilege,

it stills fails, and that's ok, actually, minor issue.

but, the interesting thing that making me have to open this case into issue list for "steam for linux " ver. is this:

the error info is so, i mean , a little bit ridiculous,

there was an error while getting the sharing information.

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershare. Error No such file or directory

Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

and the information was in an prompt box window, and the window itself just freezed. click it, no response.

so, why a steam library folder creation error, that requires SAMBA for linux and something like that??

lots of laugh. hope this issue would be fixed soon.

plus, if nothing download with steam client, to add a new secondary steam game folder from a different linux partition, it works, it's ok.

so... interesting issue for me.

What file systems are being used?

both are ext4, it is of default ubuntu install. both that 100GB ubuntu default install and that additional 200GB new ext4 partition for 2nd steam game install library folder.

the 100GB ext4 partition, the privilege is 775, i manually changed. default is 755.

the 200GB ext4 partition, created by me, manually set up the privilege is 775.

i know some linux command in the gnome console(control-alt-t, using sudo blah blah blah), if you need some output info(e.g. to troubleshoot) , just reply with the linux commands (including the command parameters), i can paste the output here, if too long, i can use some pastebin.

plus, when this issue happens, the interesting thing is that,

steam for linux, although an error window box prompts up. steam itself can normally create the correct SteamApps folder in the target 200GB partition.

but, it just show the error info, and in steam client interface, the target folder won't be added.

so, quite interesting, since, the SteamApps folder can be created in the partition, but just something wrong in the steam interface, then my privilege on linux set-up has no wrong.

so um.. heh heh. and, the error info window, these lines are in an ubuntu prompt-up window, not steam window!

there was an error while getting the sharing information.

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershare. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

steam client only prompts up saying "fails", but ubuntu prompts up a window saying samba issue, and freeze the prompt-up window, so actually, there are 2 window boxes prompt-up, one is from ubuntu, one is from steam.

and, i say this is a minor issue, due to , if nothing downloading with steam client for linux, use steam client 2nd library folder adding action, it works. so , interesting. why only fails when downloading?

This sounds more like a configuration issue vs. a Steam issue, but it is interesting that it only happens while Steam is downloading.

as u said, interesting~, my default ubuntu account group was not in the group of samba related ones. so i don't know whether this matters, but before i upgrading to ubuntu 13.10, i once was the group member of ubuntu samba groups.

about 1 month later, there'd be ubuntu 14.04 LTS, i'd upgrade to that stable ver. and check what would be...

I've recently seen this issue on a Mac as well with two HFS+ partitions.

Nothing extracted yet.
