It would be nice if Steam, like many other popular chiat programs, had an indicator that would tell the user which of their friends were using the mobile app (for example, Facebook shows a phone symbol next to their name). Perhaps their name could be highlighted in a different color and their status would be "mobile" or something like that instead of "online".
