To clarify, by a "freeze" I mean that the sound buffer keeps repeating, the screen will shut down as if the computer has shut down, and I can in no way interact with the system other than pressing 'reset'.
The problem persists after various updates.

Issue resolved: a cable got stuck in the GPU fan, causing it to overheat.
