I think that the ideal situation would be this:
Alice logs into her computer to play a game, but sees Bob is already in a shared game via a small lock icon next to the game. By pressing the play button, it asks Alice "Are you sure you want to play and disconnect Bob? (y/N)". Bob gets a message saying "Alice is considering playing this game. You may want to consider saving. (Send Alice message/exit/continue)"

I think adding putting such an icon in the friend list would be useful, as one could see if other people is using one of your games, thus avoiding to disconnect them, or they've bought their own copy and you could play without worries
example, X is playing on an authorized PC:
X is playing $game {shared_icon}
either I avoid playing, or I warn him I want to play beforehand
X is playing $game {no shared_icon}
he have his own copy, no problem
