hi there

when I use my logitech F310 controller or my gamecube->usb converter, every time I press A or b, big picture mode thinks I double tap it, as a result It keeps installing "aaaaaaa for the awesome" when I just want to view my library. When I want to return to the previous screen I'm at the home-screen again, this sometimes happens with my keyboard too but not as often as with my controller, with my controller it happens every single time, with my keyboard only once every 10 times.

I've the same problem with my wireless xbox360 controller on Ubuntu 14.04 with the xpad kernel driver. And someone at askubuntu, too: http://askubuntu.com/questions/499698/xbox-360-controller-issue-button-sensitivity.
It's impossible to navigate in big picture mode.

Confirmed with a PS3 Controller connected via bluez. I'm running ArchLinux 64bit. First time I noticed this bug was since the beta update that introduced the new steam design.

so it affects 7 people, all using some sort of xboxdrv device I guess it's confirmed then, hope someone from valve will fix this one soon.

With the mention that I'm not using xboxdrv. I just plug in the controller and it works. It actually worked fine some time ago (2 months ago maybe) when I tried messing with it... I do not need to use the controller very often so I have no idea when the bug crept in.

I didn't say you'd use xboxdrv, just a xboxdrv DEVICE, I use a logitech controller which is listed as logitech on lsusb, but it's listed as " generic xbox controller" in games because it uses xinput.

Regarding the Steam runtime question... as far as I was able to educate myself, one would have to "manually" disable it via the STEAM_RUNTIME variable, which I don't do. This is Steam installed with the deb package downloaded from steampowered.com

I did notice this line:

Regarding the Steam runtime question... as far as I was able to educate
myself, one would have to "manually" disable it via the STEAM_RUNTIME
variable, which I don't do. This is Steam installed with the deb package
downloaded from steampowered.com

I did notice this line:

STEAM_RUNTIME has been set by the user to: /home/user_name/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime

so

Affected as well. Im not using xboxdrv im using the kernel defaults. It just happens after a while using Steam Big picture. First presses seems to work ok. Im using Arch Linux.

I have to say that is indeed possible to trigger only one click, if you hit a button only for a very short time.
I'm running steam in a very simple environment (X + kwin + Steam). I think that causes the connection problems with NetworkManager.

I had to change the permissions of input devices to get steam detecting the controller. My udev rule (i know, it could be stricter):

SUBSYSTEM=="input", MODE="666"

Hmm, I don't see any obvious differences in my setup and the ones above, I'm running a default Ubuntu 14.04 setup here with a wired x360 controller (wireless and logitech ones also don't reproduce the issue). We are using SDL to gather the input, which in theory goes right to the dev node so I don't see what can be the difference yet. I'll keep testing, and if someone works out how to make it work (and then stop working) then please chime in.

I happens with my wireless xbox 360 controller on boch my Arch Linux Laptop and my Ubuntu 14.04 desktop. For some reason Big Picture Mode is taking the push as a "LONG PRESS" if you touch the button really really really fast and soft it just triggers it once. But if you press it normally it acts if you were sustaining the button pressed.
Keeping the button pressed triggers numerous pushes on big picture. (to me that seems the trick), looks like Big Picture is not waiting for the release button event and so it keeps triggering the button while its pressed.

@alfred-valve I did some testing on this.
With a small SDL2 program that basically only calls SDL_PollEvent, it works fine with both the system libSDL2 and the one that steam uses.
Also, SDL2 seems to only do repeat events for Keyboards (see [1,2])

I assume this is a bug inside the steam client.
Looking at the SDL2 api the only other way I can see is calling SDL_GameControllerGetButton (or maybe SDL_PeepEvents) in your own loop.
Maybe that goes faster than it should for some of us?

Also, it appears to be present in both stable and beta client.

I tried to see with callgrind which library calls are made, to check which sdl function steam uses. But the callfile was always empty.

I did this on my desktop computer, which also suffers from this bug. What I noticed is that Steam seems to open the controller twice, once in the normal startup routine, and then again when I switch to bigpicture mode:

Yup, it seems like in big picture mode gui the 360 analogue button input is
supersensitive. The face buttons at least, not sure about the triggers.
Anologue sticks function normally.

LC_ALL= is empty as noted on above comments, it should be like that since it overwrites all other locale enviroment values.
Im guessing issue relies on something locale specific within the code like the dot "." is used in English for decimals and in Spanish "," we use the comma to separate the integer part from the fractional part.
