I encountered a simular problem (random assert when idle / games crash on input device change) on gentoo and tracked it down to the 32bit nvidia-provided libEGL.so / libEGL.so.1. Replacing the active library with the mesa-provided varient most likely functionally broke that library, but stabilized steam and games.

Seems that steam just segfaults lately. Noticed it few beta updates ago.
Last i could get from it, everything else in terminal log is libdbusmenu warnings.
