This happens with TBUT and TF2 (the 2 games I've tried). Disabling in-game steam community makes games run again without the following X permission error:

Init item manager
ParticleUniverse: Particle Emitter Type 'Entity' registered

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 2 (X_ChangeWindowAttributes)
Serial number of failed request: 7

Game removed: AppID 226540 "The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles Demo", ProcID 4582

Also with Book of Unwritten Tales, disabling In-Game community allowed game to launch.

I had the same error with Book of Unwritten Tales. Turning off In-Game Community fixed the issue for me as well.

If it helps I have Ubuntu 12.04( x86-64) w/NVidia 310.14 driver

I may not be the OP, but I had the issue with the Book of Unwritten Tales and the update fixed it for me :-)

The bug still exits! If I enable the in-game community, can't start the game. Only with disable the in-game community I can start and play the game.

I went back and double checked - it is fixed on The Critter Chronicles, but is still broken on the original Book of Unwritten Tales - same BadAccess error as the OP.

The game developers for BoUT said that they have a new Linux binary that fixes the overlay problem.
