I just installed steam from the .deb file on Ubuntu 12.10. The download is stopping at 17,349 of 74,942 at this point, I'm not sure if it's my isp, servers, or software, but I am wondering why Steam doesn't update using a package manager. Is there a reason why we can't have the package manager handle updates?

I don't know how to attach a label, such as feature request.

Valve already have deb repository and I think they need consider use system package manager not only for Steam bootstrapper updates but for Steam client updates.

As this would be restricted to Ubuntu users only at the moment. Also this solves the problem of installing non-free software nicely even though it is just a workaround.

Steam and its games are installed in the user's directory, so they cannot be updated by the package manager. And we do not want the user to have to run as root in order to install or update games.

Many Linux programs (browsers come to mind) are installed in /usr/bin but keep their cache, config, and extensions in $HOME. Surely Steam doesn't need to be in $HOME to keep the steamapps folder there.

Yes, we know. We propose to change this approach at least for Steam.
