Using Ubuntu 14.04 x86, Steam Client Beta and PulseAudio 4.0; Steam interface sounds (Big Screen,, for instance) work, YouTube videos, in-game sounds work. All except official Steam Store trailers work, there no PulseAudio client shows up to play sound for them.

By office Steam Store trailers do you mean the ones accessed via the Store button in the Big picture interface? Or via the Steam button in the desktop steam client?

PPlaque-fcc 2014-09-25 github

In Steam Desktop Client (classic mode) you can browse Steam Store. In
Store, there are games, many of them were published with video trailers.

When I start a trailer I can watch the clip but can't hear the sound
track that belongs to the trailer I'm watching.

Hope it's clear enough to point the issue.

Use PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) to verify volume is turned up and the sound device is correct for the application.

PPlaque-fcc 2014-09-26 github

@koahv, you can read there before that youtube-originated videos
published within Steam Community are being played just fine.

Moreover, I don't get the «sound device is correct for the
application», what does that mean in this particular use? Where do I
have to check that?

Kkoahv 2014-09-26 github

pavucontrol is an application that displays a list of current applications utilising sound output. On the right hand side, to the left of the mute icon, there is a button that selects a hardware sound device from a drop down list.

Steam uses Chromium to display web content, so Chromium must be configured to output audio to the correct device, which sometimes gets misconfigured.

Though if Youtube works well, it is likely this is not the problem, because the youtube player is a part of chromium, and this works correctly.

If I think of any suggestions I will post back here. Good luck.

I have no sound either for steam store videos on 64bit Arch.
I think it's a steam runtime issue, since I get messages like this in the terminal steam was launched from.

ALSA lib pcm_ioplug.c:920:(snd_pcm_ioplug_create) ioplug: Plugin version mismatch
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

They said, there was some issue about Steam against fresh ALSA; thus,
it won't get routed via PulseAudio which likely locks ALSA in per-user
configuration (which is default for Ubuntu and maybe others).

Guess it's #3376 issue which should be linked then with this together
and updated in description to let people find it faster.

I had deleted the bundled libasound.so and associated alsa-lib plugins in the steam-runtime folder and everything's fine now.

Hello @Plaque-fcc, @Hirato, are either of you still experiencing this issue on an up to date system?

HHirato 2018-03-30 github

Seems to be working fine on my Arch system via the Steam Runtime.
With that said, I have been using Arch's steam-native-runtime package for the last while to avoid conflicts between my system and steam's libraries.

Thanks for the feedback.

By default, Steam now prefers system libraries when they are newer than the Steam runtime variant, which should have mitigated this issue. Closing.

Nothing extracted yet.
