[fglrx] XCOM Enemy Within runs with a (very) low framerate compared to Windows

Hello, I'd like to report that XCOM Enemy Within works very slowly on Linux when compared to what I get out of the same computer on Windows, using a Radeon HD 7850 video card. On Linux I get something like 15-20 FPS with every option maxed @ 1920x1080, while on Windows the game runs stably in the 45-60 FPS range (with v-sync active).

The distro I am using is Xubuntu 14.04.1, freshly installed.

This is my hardware configuration;as video drivers I am using the proprietary "fglrx" AMD driver that comes bundled with the distribution (more info below).

It has to be noted that the same game runs absolutely fine on my laptop, which uses the same operating system but uses an Nvidia video card instead, so I guess this is related to AMD's drivers instead of just the game strictly (I didn't have similar problems with other games so far).

I have just tried the game while using the latest AMD Catalyst drivers (version 14.9), downloaded from the company's website and installed using this guide; the game still exhibits the same behavior.

Hello, maybe you can give the open source driver a try. I'm fully enjoying this game with full effects at 1280x1024 with my discrete Radeon board (i'm using DRI_PRIME to offload 3D rendering)

Last time I played this game on my 7950 it ran at about 50fps on older drivers (with mesa 10.1). If you can get mesa 10.2 or 10.3 then I would check out the open drivers.

Hello,
I have just installed the latest Catalyst drivers (15.7) and I still get rather low FPS (27-25 depending on the 3D scene) but it is still unacceptable when comparing this to the Windows performances.
I'd like to give a go at the opensource drivers but I'm honestly scared to mess things up as that would mean having to install a new mesa version -- and I am unsure about how to revert everything in case things go awry.

The video driver fglrx has become obsolete in favor of AMDGPU-PRO and there will be no more updates to this driver.

Closing as general video driver quality from 2014 / 2015 is no longer relevant.
