This is something that's affected me a few weeks now, though I don't have an exact timeframe for it.

If the autoplay setting is on, the first movie of a game page refuses to play. You'll only get a poster. If a game has more than one movies it will play the others fine. But even switching back and forward between movies will not make the first movie work.

However, if you disable the autoplay setting (and refresh the page by going back to store first) all the movies work fine.

Actually, pressing the fullscreen button does prod it enough to play. After that it will also play in normal size.

This is xubuntu 14.04 btw. But at this point I'm not sure how relevant that still is since movies do play.

Happens for me in Kubuntu 14.04 too. Latest Steam client. Doesn't seem to affect autoplay in Big Picture mode.

Does the same page work if you view it in Chrome or FireFox?

yes and yes

Oh if it helps, the time will show 0:00 NaN/NaN, which at least is a dead give away for one bug. Though it's probably caused by the real bug or something else.

I also see these NaN's in timestamps before starting a slow starting video but it updates properly once the video starts. So not sure if this is even related to the bug or just a different artifact (that should still be cleaned up, but to a lesser priority :))

I'm pretty sure I see the same issue that started happening in the last few months. I can usually get one video to auto play, but then, for example if I'm viewing my queue, the first game will autoplay its video, but then subsequent first videos for games won't play, I get the NaN in the timestamp as @qfox describes.

FYI: it seems these flash-caused instabilities have just crashed my client. Hard to tell for sure, of course, since the client could freeze over for any reason. But the anomaly happened right before the app became completely unresponsive (usually it's only the store tab that get's screwed) and it just flat-out crashed (-> exited) after a bit.

Any chance a non-flash variety can be implemented? What do you need flash for on the store-end anyways? Apart from videos, I'm curious what part still needs flash...

We plan on converting all videos on the store to html5 native video format.

Fwiw, autoplay seems to be fixed in the current (beta) build.

Though there may be room for a more generic flash ticket, this issue seems resolved so I will close it.

Thanks :)

I was wrong, I thought I saw a video autoplay but the setting wasn't on and I see that it still has the same problem.

FWIW: I've had to do a fresh install today due to crashed drive and the steam client is still locking up on me on the store pages due to flash. Autoplaying videos has the same issue as before (wont play, show NaN's in progress indicator but disabling autoplay and selecting videos manually works fine). On top of that, it seems very sensitive to locking up the store page entirely. Switching back and forward between library will reset that, but it's very annoying. Locking up the store page can't be what you guys want ;)

Fresh install of Xubuntu (xfce) 14.10, GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

(If it helps to push this bug forward; I'm a JS dev and may be able to help debugging/resolving the matter to some degree. LMK)

Just to say, the problem seems to have been resolved in the latest update.

Ooh, looks that way. Super!

Let's hope this also fixes the general instability (which I think is/was related to this issue).

Closing.
