Steam had been working for months, but, since some time ago, it always
crashes when starting: I issue "steam --reset", steam will start the
first time, but after that, it will always segfault on line 729 of
steam.sh.

According to gdb, the segmentation fault occurs on libdbus-1.so.3, as
steam seems to be trying to do something networkmanager-related.
(Full backtrace: https://bpaste.net/raw/c23e3838b652)

This is on Gentoo GNU/Linux (amd64). I am using the runtime libraries
packaged with steam, and I've also tried after starting the system
messagebus and by running steam through dbus-launcher.

I don't have networkmanager, but other people tell me they are able to
run steam without networkmanager, so I suppose this is not the issue.

If this is the same as my issue, and it works as long as you don't check "remember my password," I don't think it has anything to do with networkmanager. It is probably trying to contact gnome-keyring or some other password manager which is not running to retrieve the password, and crashes when that dbus service doesn't exist.

While I've not tried not checking "remember my password" yet, the segmentation fault happens inside libnm-glib.so.4 (see the full backtrace I linked), so I'd expect it to be somehow networkmanager-related. I may be wrong, of course.

Yeah you're right, mine has libnm in the backtrace as well. Maybe when you check "remember my password" it assumes you're on a home computer and tries to find the best connection (e.g. wifi vs ethernet) or maybe it's using networkmanager's wifi password storing system as some kind of hacked up password manager. Maybe it does some sort of sanity checking (like checking if your ip is in the same subnet as when it was saved) before using a saved password, to protect against people connecting with stolen computers. That's wierd.

This is a duplicate of #3415 then?

Nnjsg 2014-11-08 github

#3415 is about something on openSUSE. If you really intend to mark this bug as a duplicate of that one, please update the bug summary accordingly...

It's about things crashing when the remember-password checkbox is checked, which appears to be the issue here. Do you believe that it's distro-specific and two distinct problems?

Nnjsg 2014-11-08 github

This is also not about some "beta", unless the default version of the steam client that is being downloaded is the beta and it is opt-out, instead of opt-in.

Ggdrewb-valve maintainer 2014-11-08 github

The beta from that time is now the current regular Steam.

Nnjsg 2014-11-08 github

no, I don't believe it is distro-specific, but the bug you marked this one as a duplicate of says "Steam Beta segfaults on openSUSE", not "Steam Beta segfaults"

So I finally had an opportunity to try steam without "remember my password", and this indeed avoids the SIGSEGV. Tomorrow, I will see if I can reproduce the issue on IA-32. (There seems to be an issue on my IA-32 laptop as well, but I am not sure if it is the same issue.)

Nnjsg 2014-11-08 github

(Just a small note that I wasn't able to reproduce this on IA-32, but I can't confirm the problem doesn't exist there -- I get a segmentation fault, but it is a different one, and it also happens on the first startup after steam --reset.)

Eennui93 2015-04-23 github

I can confirm this issue running Steam inside a 32-bit chroot without the dbus daemon running and the "Remember my password" option checked.

rm -fr .local/share/Steam/config clears up the issue. Will leave the save password option unchecked for the time being.

Stack trace from gdb for those interested.
