You can try your luck with passing -steamos to the commandline arguments of Steam when you start it, it will remove this option along with a number of other things you might not necessarily want.

Sadly, it removes the option to exit steam together with return to desktop (only shutdown, restart, hibernate are left)...
I'd actually like to see this feature as well. I have a similar set up with MythTV on Linux and it would be nice to jump in out out of Steam cleanly. It would be nice to just limit the option to "Exit Steam" since this is in the living room. I have to say, with the new Steam controller, Steam for Linux is a really nice platform.

Hi, this is a feature request for the Big-Picture mode.
I'm running a setup where I can switch between watching TV (with VDR), watching movies (with XBMC) and playing games (with Steam in BP).
VDR is the main application. It starts XBMC or Steam and minimizes itself. After XBMC or Steam are closed, it maximizes itself again.
My Problem: If I accidentally select "Return to Desktop" instead of "Exit Steam", Steam still runs in the background and VDR never realises to maximize itself again.
It would be nice to have some kind of option, which would remove "Return to Desktop"-entry from the menu.
