@Eleuin have you tried running steam --reset?
i have, and it returns the exact same error
(Update: I have found that its only the unstable version that is broke, the stable one from the repos installs as it should)
found what may be the problem. installation only seems to work using AMD's FOSS drivers, using fglrx seems to cause the segmentation fault
I'm on Ubuntu 14.10 and AMD Catalyst says that driver packaging version
is «14.201.1006.1002-140902a-175607C-ATI» and recognizes both 8770M and
8330 DGPU+APU graphics. Using proprietary driver package from Ubuntu
repository. Steam works, games work.
Same issue on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS with fglrx-updates AMD drivers:
ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt".

Hello, fglrx has been discontinued in favor of mesa and AMDGPU-PRO.
Closing as this driver no longer has support from the vendor.
Nothing extracted yet.
before anyone suggests, yes i have tested on multiple installs (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and ElementaryOS), and i have done apt-get install --reinstall several times too
this is the console output in its entirety
i have removed all steam files, and even tried this on fresh installs, with and without the FOSS drivers.
just on the odd chance this might be the issue:
