Left 4 Dead 2 was working great on my system, but it just stopped at some unknown point. I threw a 2>/tmp/debug on the end of the command to see what was erroring:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.
pid 2864 != 2862, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)
ERROR: ld.so: object '/mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.
pid 2863 != 2862, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)
ERROR: ld.so: object '/mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.

that file is there

$ ls -lh /mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bob bob 219K Nov 25 15:52 /mnt/valve/.steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so

should I delete my .steam folder and let steam re-retrieve all that? I'd rather learn to fix this in some way?

The gameoverlayrenderer messages are likely unrelated to the failure.

The other errors beg the question "can you share Steam Library folders between 64bit and 32bit linux's"? For example on this machine I have both 32 bit and 64 bit Debian testing, and both 64 and 32 bit arch linux partitions and I share the steam libraries amongst them all. But not with the windows partition.

There is no formal guarantee that any sharing works or will ever work, so usually you shouldn't do it. There's a chance it might work for the case you mention but you'd be on your own if anything strange happens.

Who's in charge of bandwidth at valve? This seems like an extremely wasteful position. I mean I appreciate that steam is like a library of my games online. But downloading a 35 gig game five times over for a single laptop seems excessively wasteful in bandwidth, disk usage, the whole nine yards.
