I noticed running Steam from the command line I received this message;

[1204/164614:ERROR:nss_util.cc(1018)] Failed to load NSS libraries.

I have the package; mozilla-nss-3.16.5 installed on my system, so not sure why I should be getting that it failed to load? Below is the contents of mozilla-nss-3.16.5

Steam is a 32bit application, so you would need the 32bit varient of mozilla-nss-3.16.5 to be relevant to steam.

Ahh forgot about steam as 32bit...

I installed a compat32 pkg, I'm no longer seeing the message...

thanks

Nope this is not working, for some reason the message wasn't there, and now it's reappeared again with the 32bit package installed;

[1210/171959:ERROR:nss_util.cc(1018)] Failed to load NSS libraries

I have mozilla-nss-3.16.5 installed

Hhoxu 2014-12-31 github

I'm getting the same error and steam refuses to start:

[1231/173521:ERROR:nss_util.cc(1018)] Failed to load NSS libraries.

Edit: Steam works now, although I still get that error on startup.

Mmzdunek 2015-01-10 github

on Fedora 21

yum install nss.i686 nss.x86_64 nss-util.i686 nss-util.x86_64 nss-softokn.i686 nss-softokn.x86_64 nss-softokn-freebl.i686 nss-softokn-freebl.x86_64

then remove\rename
all files from
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/nss
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nss
and
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libnssutil3.so
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnssutil3.so

@mzdunek you working with Valve, who's idea is this to remove/rename them?

Is the /nss directory and libnssutil3.so files recreated if they are backed up?

thanks

Mmzdunek 2015-01-11 github

These are steps I made to resolve this problem on my rig. Personally I changed file names so on startup steam uses newer system files. If the files have been deleted you can always restore them by calling

steam --reset

official info in steam kb: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3134-TIAL-4638

?ghost 2015-01-11 github

I made backups but they aren't being recreated, so not sure how this is working?

I"ll just try steam --reset

thanks

?ghost 2015-01-11 github

nope steam --reset doesn't do anything, still get the message...

?ghost 2015-02-08 github

Still getting this;

[0207/173301:ERROR:nss_util.cc(1018)] Failed to load NSS libraries.

I still don't understand why this went away when I installed the 32bit pkg for nss, then at some later date returned? Hmmm

Here's the name and contents of the 32bit nss pkg;
