Planetary Annihilation causes Steam to crash

After pressing Play button in Steam game starts but shortly after that Steam crashes: window, icon and its process disappears. Game continues to run but it shows black screen, its process can be killed only with SIGKILL.
Steam restarting fixes this problem.
I cannot capture the moment when Steam dies so cannot provide crash log. However, Steam created and uploaded few crash dumps just before its death:

If you disable Steam Overlay for it, does it still happen?

Looks like game doesn't crashes if steam overlay is disabled.

As i thought, something in Steam Overlay causes it all to die.

Unfortunately I don't think the server holds onto them for that long, but I will double-check on Friday as I'm currently out of the office.
