Steam won't update (Stuck at 0 KB)

Hi. I'm having trouble installing steam in Mint 17.1 (AMD64).
It takes a long time to find the update, and then it hangs at 0 KB. The same thing happens in the latest deb as well as the one found in the software center.
I'm guessing the "Download failed: http error 0" has something to do with it. I'm connecting to internet through a router, no proxy needed for other apps.
Already tried reinstalling it, deleting the ~/.steam folder.

Well, apparently it was a weird network issue. I manually tried downloading the files from media.steampowered.com with wget and it worked from there. I even rebooted into the live USB and nothing downloaded. After another reboot, everything started working fine.

So just to confirm you can fix this with a reboot? No need to do anything if this issue occurs?

Exactly. Maybe it was an issue of their server, or something in my connection.

I didn't analyse the packets, but I think the server was closing the TCP connection too early.

It seems like it might be a DNS thing. I ran into this, then flushed everything under steampowered.com out of my local DNS cache, restarted steam, and the download started working.

I had the same problem with Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon. It resolved itself after being stuck at 0KB for 10 to 15 minutes or so, while I was researching a possible fix. Then it quite quickly progressed through the download. I had tried a reboot already, which made no immediate difference. I don't have a local DNS cache, so that doesn't seem to be relevant either.

same for me as @gaetjen , it fixed itself when i was reading this thread :)
though i have unbound cache and dnscrypt but as it started to work by itself i guess that if this is nw related it was something on steam's end.
