While trying to use playonlinux, I got an error message saying I didn't have opengl32bit librarys, after reinstalling nvidia drivers and their 32 bit compatibility librarys, steam appears to be up and running.
This was totally my fault for not paying attention to the driver installation questions, but still you could provide the steam client with a more helpful error message other than "3354 Segmentation fault", because if I hadn't opened playonlinux it would take me ages to figure out why steam was hanging.
