After a "Steam client update" session, all my installed games are no longer installed. Judging from the current disk usage, all the games have actually been deleted from my hard drive (I don't know about my saved games yet).

Also, the following suspicious sequence of events occurred:

  • The usual (check for) update popup window appeared.
  • It didn't finish quickly, so I pressed "CANCEL". (This was the first time I have tried to press "CANCEL" i this window).
  • Pressing "CANCEL" caused the window to close.
  • Strangely, a new updater window appeared immediately afterwards (as if the updater process simply got restarted).
  • This time the update process completed in a timely fashion, but going though a phase where it downloaded a new Steam client, and installed it.
  • At this point, all my game installations have disappeared.

My suspicion here, is that the update process "went rogue" and destroyed my Steam state after I pressed "CANCEL".

A couple of other potentially related things happened at the same time:

  • The Steam client forgot my password, so it asked for manual login (it usually logs in automatically).
  • The "Library" page changed to show all my purchased games, not just the Linux compatible games, as it had done prior to this event.
