Have you attempted to just get the .rpm and install it that way?
This is the RPM for OpenSUSE. Steam only provides a Ubuntu package directly, which for the short period I was using it, seems to exhibit the same problems.
It's odd because it seems like the more I use it, the more stable it gets. Perhaps there's just missing files it needs to create or something like that, and then it crashes because they aren't there yet... I'm not really sure.
Most people just assume that the GUI package managers do everything they should. I was suggesting getting just the .rpm and installing it through Zypper instead of YaST so we can see what the output is.
please provide the system information
I've got the same issue. I'm on a ThinkPad E530 Edge.

I should note that it's practically doesn't crash any more. It seems to get more stable as time goes on.. :/

We just updated https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=games&package=steam Can you try if the latest version solves the problem?
Is this issue still active?
This doesn't seem to occur anymore, I'm on 12.3 and I can't even remember the last time Steam crashed.
Thanks, closing.
Nothing extracted yet.
Steam constantly locks up and / or randomly crashes under OpenSUSE 12.2 using the installer package in the "games" repository.
There are a myrad of files stored under /tmp/dumps/ which appear to be created by Steam when it crashes. I have copied these out and can attach them if they're useful for diagnosing the sources of these issues.
