Running steam --reset has worked around the issue for now. I actually first had this issue a week or two ago and worked around it with stream --reset back then, but then the problem came back today and I finally bothered to report it this time.
I took a snapshot of my filesystem before I ran steam --reset, so I can bring my computer back to that state again if someone has something they want me to try in order to debug it.
I'm having the same problem and it appeared at about the same time you posted this. I'm not sure if it's related and i'm not too savvy with linux but I thought I'd add my 2 cents and see if my problem is related or just coincidence. This is what I'm getting:

I was also using steam --reset as a work around but I have to run it every time I want to start up steam and it deletes my downloaded games. Recently I found an older work around for a similar looking problem, i delete .local/share/Steam/config/config.vdf and I can start it up again, I just need to log-in again is all but my downloaded games stay put.
Also recently had a new problem show up, steam doesn't seem to recognize the actual size of the flash drive i'm running Puppy on. it's a 64G flash drive, has 54.9G available but steam seems to think I only have 700M available so I can't install KSP (which is all I use this flash drive for, as a portable steam platform I can plug into any desktop and play ksp or altitude on) this problem may be unrelated however, not quite sure yet.

I have similar issue since I switched to Arch Linux.

steam --reset does not work for me. Steam crash as usual.
@leesei even if you are experiencing similar symptoms, your problem is not the same. Have you opened a different issue about it?

I also tried steam-wrapper-git and steam also crashed. But I'm afraid to add more noise to this issue with unofficial environment.
Yeah, I was thinking of suggesting that the responses seem to be different sorts of issues. The issue I see sometimes only gives me a couple lines of output. If others are getting more lines of output, then it's probably a crash for a different reason later on in the startup.
I've had this same issue several times since. Each time I've worked around it by using steam --reset.

I haven't had this issue in years and I've since updated to a newer Ubuntu version. I'm going to close this issue. Anyone else having this issue now probably should just open a new issue so there's less unrelated/outdated noise.
Hello, I'm here after a few years because I had this problem, well, the solution is simple, just go to the folder that contains the steam executable file and run it with the terminal, probably you will see a steam update window and wait the update is finished, go back to the terminal and it should be finished and you can type again, try to open steam by running "steam" and it should open steam normally. It worked for me, if anyone is reading this I recommend giving it a try.
