sudo reboot is not a hard reboot, if you are using systemd, I think they recommend sudo shutdown -r now, but the system is still safely stopping any io traffic going to the hard drive and trying to give services a chance to finish what they are doing.
I mistyped. I only power it off with sudo reboot when I can actually get to a terminal. Sometimes it won't even let me do that much, meaning I have to hit the reset button on my case. I've been shutting Steam down before rebooting lately and have yet to have the problem again, but that's all the proof I have that it's Steam's fault.
Hello @ElTimablo, are you still experiencing this issue on an up to date system?
I'm not, but I am experiencing another logout-related bug where steam
crashes when the logout dialog is opened. I'll open a separate ticket for
that though.

Thanks for retesting. You might be seeing #4558 which is not a crash.

Hello,
Dunno if this bug came back, but I consistently can reproduce it on OpenSUSE 15.4 and 15.5(beta), never thought of reporting it as I basically was ignoring it, but every time I want to logout from the system I have to close the Steam Client via the tray icon, with that done system logout and shut down work fine, otherwise those logout/shutdown stop to work and I have to do it via a terminal.
Normal start, Steam running and working fine:
slemke@localhost:~> steam
Couldn't import apt, please install python3-apt or update steamdeps for your distribution.

Hello @srlemke, please open a new issue report so that your issue can be tracked properly.
I'm unable to reboot, shutdown, or log out of my computer if Steam is running. If I accidentally try to, the shutdown/logout buttons become completely ineffective and I have to hard power off my computer with sudo reboot. Obviously, I don't want to keep doing that, and I'd like to be able to shut it down with the button, rather than having to put extra wear on my computer every time.
