Adding the arch option to the sources.list entry and accordingly forcing the whole repo to i386 for all time (!) is NOT the recommended way to support multiarch in Linux. Furthermore, repo options are rarely used and cause problems with other programs. Use a virtual package instead.
Good point. We'll look into this, thanks!
Great, thank you slouken!
You're welcome!
I haven't worked with virtual packages before. Is there good documentation or some good examples I can look at?
Sorry, I usally work with german documentations - I think these wouldn't help you very much. The best starting point is probably http://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch
No problem. It turns out we don't need a virtual package, we just needed to configure the repo as supporting the amd64 architecture, and the package manager does the right thing with the i386 steam package.
This will go live after the next Linux Steam update.
Great news, thank you!
Nothing extracted yet.
I would like to suggest a very fast way to support people with 64-bit systems better: Make your repo multiarch!
Ubuntu supports multiarch, so it's currently no problem to install and run steam on 64-bit systems. One problem is, that we can't use your repo and have to install the package manually. Anyway, dependencies are correctly resolved by downloading and installing many 32-bit libraries - as said, Ubuntu supports multiarch and it's working great.
In the long-term, a 64-bit-package of steam would be just necessary, but in the short-term, multiarch-support of your repo would be great. Just add the appropiate entries to the Release file and set dependencies using the :i386-suffix.
