You are reporting this to the wrong devs, reach out to the AMD proprietary driver devs.
Anything where the X server crashes is a bug on the driver's end and not the client application.
wait... whats the 'right' kernel
@calexil The one that's actually compatible with those drivers. As you can see, I booted into 4.4, while 4.2 is the compatible version at the time of reporting.
OK I agree, that it is a bug in the amdgpu pro driver. I have the same problem with the amdgpu pro 16.50 driver on openSUSE Leap 42.2 and a RX480 card. Which is the best way to report this bug to AMD?
Is there a workaround to get Steam running? The driver may be buggy, but till now Steam is the only program which crahses X on my system, other programs which uses OpenGL work well.
The workaround is to compile the kernel correctly. AMDGPU Pro currently only supports Ubuntu and it doesn't seem to like any other system yet.
No, AMDGPU PRO Version 16.50 supports RHEL and SLES / SLED 12 SP 2 too. See the following link:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDGPU-PRO-Driver-for-Linux-Release-Notes.aspx
And openSUSE Leap 42.2 is based on SLED 12 SP 2, so this driver installs an works, but not for Steam.
You can report driver bugs to AMD itself here: http://www.amd.com/report
I can only say that it works fine on Ubuntu 16.04. One thing you have to make sure is that you start the system with the AMDGPU kernel module installed. You will run into the same issues with other games and software, especially with Vulkan backed games.
@blachner I use also openSUSE Leap 42.2 (64-bit) with AMDGPU-Pro. I found out what is wrong. The packages for Ubuntu and RHEL contains 32-bit and 64-bit libraries. But only the packages for SLED 12 SP 2 has only 64-bit libraries. The steam software needs the 32-bit libraries too. That is why, steam and X server crash. AMD could fix this to provides also the 32-bit packages of AMDGPU-Pro. :-(
@blachner FYI: I have use the 32-bit AMDGPU-Pro packages from Ubuntu 16.04 and installed the 32-bit libraries on openSUSE Leap 42.2 (64-bit) by hand. Now steam is working. This is a faux-pas from AMD because they have not provide the 32-bit libraries for 64-bit system. :-(
@Freespacer Very interesting. Hopefully AMD fix this issue soon. But I see the RHEL archive miss the 32 Bit libs too. So they are only in the Ubuntu packages?
Can you write what you have done to use the Ubuntu libs on openSUSE?

Disregard this, I booted into the wrong kernel without noticing it.
It seems that Steam is incompatible with the new beta AMDGPU drivers, as it kills xorg upon launching it.
