Dota 2 uses a newer version of the Source engine than what is currently ported... and a specially modified version at that, from my understanding.
It may be some time before it winds up on Linux, but it's coming.

You can play it with Wine. That is what I am doing right now (with high settings and an Nvidia GTX 460 it runs surprisingly well). Can't wait for it to be natively available for Linux.

Thanks, I tried to install it a few months ago. Due to the old wine version probably, I tries many things, spent 5 hours or so to install it, made many changes on my computer, and I have ended to have a black screen when opening my computer... due to the bad installed driver for my graphic card. That day, I reinstalled everything to get a clean install and I've never talked about Dota2 anymore.
Your post made me want to retry a last time, and it worked =D ! Thanks, it works nicely and very smoothly with my Nvidia GT 630M, a bit long to charge and got to remove Compiz, installing vcrun2010 and that's it. This time, I decided not to go too far in the changes I got to do. Thanks again ;)

These "+1" comments aren't really useful at the moment. Valve is aware that Dota 2 is desired and it will come in time. If you're just "+1"ing for the sake of following the conversation, you can watch/unwatch the issue by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the area where it says "Watch thread" (or, for those who want to unwatch, select "Unwatch thread".
Every time someone "+1"s this, the development team gets an email which just adds up and distracts the developers.

If the development does not want to receive any more emails, I believe the best solution would be to give a date for Valve when intending to make this launch. So avoid staff come here and put +1 indicating that it is one more person who is interested.
For the fact of being put +1 this only to indicate that a person is more similar to a vote. If the idea get perhaps all projects end up having a list +1 where people would put their vote for who should go first.

There's no date available; it'll come when it comes. The Steam-for-Linux guys are breaking Valve tradition by actually setting accurate milestones (for those familiar with Valve Time, you'll understand). It's known that people are interested. There's just no publicly (and probably no internally) known window for when Dota2 will be available, so there's no date to be posted here. That's the main difference between expected dates (traditional) and milestones (git-development standard).
It's unlikely that the amount of +1's will have any effect on when Dota 2 gets ported; Dota2 is still technically in an invite-only beta AND is still in active development. The version of the Source engine is not ported over yet; as-is, we're only seeing Source1 and GoldSrc games on the Linux client... and even then, not all of them.
Dota2 is coming, +1 or not. You could have 100,000 +1's and still wouldn't change too much because it's not ready yet. Just be patient.

@ PauloFerreira25: Valve will not give a date. They will be finished when they think they are. You should appreciated that concept because it is the reason why Valve games barely have bugs. I highly encourage them not to give a release date and keep up there system (and there snack fridge).

No. It just floods the inbox of every moderator and every developer assigned to this repository with emails that just say "+1"

Without exception, a +1 is hugely negative thing to post. It doesn't help

There are others, such as having a website where people can go there and talk that are waiting (oops, I think it's already seen it somewhere).
In short, what is happening is:
The Valve depends on customers, and customers of the games. If there is no game client, and thus has no $ $ $. The Valve is entering the Linux market because of $ $ $, if not to take the "free help" we are demonstrating on where to get more $ $ $, then I believe that Valve will try to follow the same path as Microsoft launch what he wants, how he wants and when he wants, and thus lose their market. As is happening in migrating from Windows to Linux.
In short, sir @MrSchism, please do your part. Stop complaining and send it to your boss to our request, propose a solution to the customer instead of just saying:
"Please stop talking."
Dota 2 is only one of the game if all games do, oh yes your inbox will be full.
@MrSchism do you have the power to close this issue? If they're already working on it, I agree there's no point having this exist any more. The arguments in favour of keeping it going seem silly.

What is DotA 2?
If that's a serious question, it's a game. The first one was a Warcraft III mod called Defense of the Ancients. The sequel was made using a customized Source engine. It's a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA)/ Action Real Time Strategy (ARTS) game. It's technically still in Beta, but it's a popular freemium (free-to-play, cash for specific in-game content) game with a strong following as an eSport.
Due to the complexity and specificity of its Source version and current issues regarding drivers and Source on linux, it'll probably still be a while before its released. If they release it soon, it'll probably perform poorly and will likely flood the bugtracker.

Valve would open things that is not valve specific so the community can help, this may improve the release date.. still is in Valve charge decide what is what is not "openable" but certainly there are things that community can help. I know I'm nobody to say what Valve would do but, this may replace the useless +1 comments to something more usefull like bug reports..

Since i would love a Dota 2 on Steam/Linux i did some research and it seems like A LOT of other users would love that too. May be worth a consideration.
Edit: I should mention that the Windows Version of Dota 2 can be emulated with WineHQ quite good.
